During the month of October, we are focusing our attention towards simplifying our lives. Ready or not, Thanksgiving and Christmas are right around the corner. Yikes!
As believers, our heart craves the simplicity of celebrating the reason for the seasons. But, when it comes right down to it, the tasks on our plates often overwhelm our ability to be present and relaxed during these precious times.
Spending time in October to reevaluate responsibilities and tasks will allow you more time during the holidays.
While the holiday list of things to do still remains, the daily tasks will be reduced allowing you space to do and enjoy the holiday baking, shopping, and decorating without the overwhelming feeling of it all.
Ecclesiastes 3:1 says, “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.”
This biblical truth is such a great reminder that every season of life requires a reassessment of responsibilities and tasks.
When was the last time you reassessed the tasks you perform?
For instance, when you had children, did you reassess what responsibilities you were carrying and adjusted for the addition of caring for a child? Few of us do and yet, according to Ecclesiastes 3:1, this is exactly what we need to do in order to live a more simplified and fulfilling life.
October is your month to start purging those tasks that are not a priority in your season of life. Will you join me?
It’s Time to Simplify
If you are up for the challenge, let’s start my writing down all the roles you perform. Do this by asking yourself, “I am….” For example, if I were to answer this question I would say, “I am a mother, wife, business owner, bible study leader, daughter, friend, and volunteer.”
When you have done this, spend time filling in the responsibilities you fulfill in each of these roles. For instance, as a mother, I help my children do their homework, take them to and from their activities, do their laundry, and help them carry out their daily chores. Do this same exercise for each of the roles you mentioned above.
Sit with this list of roles and responsibilities for a day or so. Is there anything you are missing and need to add?
When you feel your list is complete, ask yourself, “What roles no longer serve me?” “What responsibilites can I let go off during this season of life?” As you work through your list, cross off those areas that no longer serve as a priority for you today.
As you review this list, please remember, some of your responsibilities may still need to be completed. But, think outside the box and ask yourself, “Can someone else do this task for me to help simplify my life?” The answer to this question is likely “yes!” Are you willing to ask for help?
I’m so excited to hear how you are purging those areas of your life that no longer serve you! Please know, this process is not easy. If it was, you would have already done so. But, as you embark on this simplified living journey for the month of October, remember that you are living in just one of many seasons of life. Just because you are eliminating a role today does not mean it is eliminated forever! Embrace the season of life and live it out to its fullest!
Praying you through,
